Colorado Springs, CO – The Colorado Springs Airport (COS) has received a $9,000 grant from the Colorado Energy Office (CEO) through their Charge Ahead Colorado program to build a Level 2 dual-port electric vehicle charging station. The Charge Ahead Program’s goal is to help improve air quality, encourage deployment of electric vehicles across the state, and support implementation of the Colorado Electric Vehicle Plan.

“This grant will allow COS to provide electric charging stations to fill a growing need for our travelers” said Greg Phillips, Director of Aviation for the Colorado Springs Airport.

The project is slated to begin construction in late fall with an anticipated completion in the beginning of 2020. The charging station will have the capability of charging two electric vehicles and will be located in the valet parking lot and accessible to travelers utilizing that lot.

“At COS, we take seriously our role in leading efforts in the Colorado Springs community to be more sustainable and to promote energy efficiency at the airport.  We have upgraded most interior and exterior lighting to LED lighting and we are currently building a pilot project of covered solar parking for 40 vehicles.  This new project, using this grant from the CEO, is another step in our ongoing efforts to meet the evolving needs of our travelers and to bring electric charging stations to the Colorado Springs Airport.  We hope to follow this as soon as possible with additional charging stations and more sustainability projects as funding allows.” said Phillips.

According to the Department of Energy, Alternative Fuels Data Center, there are approximately 21 public electric vehicle charging stations in the City of Colorado Springs.

COS currently serves 13 nonstop destinations on 4 airlines, including the return of Frontier’s seasonal service. With up to 35 daily departures to choose from and connecting options to over 300 destinations around the world, COS encourages residents in southern Colorado to “look before you book,” and offers simple parking, easy check-in, and a short drive home.
