Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain (PPAM) will host the first annual Youth Fishing Derby at Crystal Creek Reservoir on Saturday, Sept. 9 from 8:30-11:30 a.m.

The derby, open for youth ages 6-15 years old, will kick off with demonstrations provided by Angler’s Covey in casting, knot tying, baiting and fish handling. The first 100 youth in need of fishing supplies to participate in the derby will be provided with fishing gear.

“We are excited to partner with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and many other great organizations to offer this free, community event to get kids excited about getting outdoors to fish for maybe even the first time,” said Skyler Rorabaugh, manager of Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain. “Taking this opportunity to get our youth out in nature will not only create lasting memories, but also instills life lessons such as patience, responsibility and respect. We look forward to hosting this derby for many years to come.”

Awards will be presented following the event for the biggest and smallest fish, the most fish caught, the most variety of fish and of course, the first fish. Free lunch and vehicle access to Pikes Peak Highway will also be provided. A state fishing license is not required for youth participants age 15 and younger.

The Youth Fishing Derby is made possible thanks to the collaboration between PPAM, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and many other sponsors including Colorado Springs Utilities, Angler’s Covey, United States Forest Service – Pikes Ranger District, Aramark, Pinello’s Taxidermy, Diversus Health, Eldorado Natural Spring Water, Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Walmart, Target, Duluth Trading Co, Scheels and Costco.
