On Sunday, February 13, 2022, at 5:52 A.M., officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) were dispatched to the area of South Circle Drive and South Hancock Expressway regarding a single vehicle crash. Upon arrival, officers observed a single vehicle rolled over into a ditch and located a deceased adult female on scene. Due to the nature of the incident, the CSPD Major Crash Team responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation.

The investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle was traveling north on Circle Dive when the vehicle left the right side of the roadway. The vehicle went off the road and struck a tree before coming to rest in a ditch. On Monday, February 14, 2022, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy of the driver. The female driver was identified as 43-year-old Joy Smith. This is the 3rd traffic fatality this year. At this time last year, we had 3 fatalities as well.

This continues to be an on-going investigation. It is unknown currently if speed or impairment were factors in this crash.
