The Colorado Springs Airport (COS) is set to commence renovation efforts aimed at modernizing its 29-year-old terminal on September 10. The initiative, known as the "ElevateCOS" project, will encompass enhancements in sustainability, accessibility, updated infrastructure, and improved amenities.
The journey since our terminal was built in 1994 has been profound. As we usher in this modernization project with ElevateCOS, our goal is to mirror the modernity of our 2019 pre-security side upgrade,” Greg Phillips, Director of Aviation for COS. “This transformation is not a solitary construction project but a collaborative journey with our partners on this project and the entire community to reimagine travel spaces and create an exceptional COS experience."
ElevateCOS will be financially supported through various sources, including Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) Airport Improvement Grant (AIG) funding, FAA Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) Airport Terminal Program (ATP) funding, and FAA Passenger Facility Charge (PFC) funding. The project will not draw from taxpayer funds.
Overseeing the project alongside COS are Nunn Construction and HB&A Architecture and Planning, both selected through the City’s Request for Proposal (RFP) process.
"With our first reading of the entire terminal modernization RFP for design in early 2018, HB&A recognized the project's long-term impact on the Pikes Peak Region. HB&A is honored to lead and direct the team of architects, designers, and engineers collaborating with airport leadership to bring this project to fruition. Together, we're improving airport aesthetics, lighting, convenience, and comfort for travelers. Our goal is to establish COS as the preferred airport of choice, elevating the travel experience for years to come,” said Mike Richardson, HB&A Project Manager and Principal in Charge.
Nunn Construction will execute the project in phases, commencing with the first phase on September 10 and concluding in early 2024. This initial phase entails the creation of new hold rooms for gates two and four, an upgraded Premier Lounge, and improved restroom facilities.
COS will provide monthly media updates throughout the project, with the inaugural media day scheduled in October. Media representatives will receive timely information preceding each media day.
