The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department is the process of preparing a comprehensive wayfinding design package for open spaces acquired under the Trails, Open Space and Parks (TOPS) program. The project will produce design guidelines establishing the design standards for signage and wayfinding within the TOPS Open Spaces. This includes fonts, styles, elements, colors, materials, signage placement, signage hierarchy and signage maintenance standards and requirements. Once completed the wayfinding design package will be implemented throughout the TOPS Open Spaces beginning in mid-2020.
The wayfinding project shall seek to achieve the following goals:
- Create a consistent signage and wayfinding system across the TOPS Open Space properties
- Create a wayfinding package that enhances the natural aesthetics of the property
- Improve navigation for all modes of non-motorized recreational travel within the open space; improve the user experience and emergency services efficiencies
- Reinforce the identity of the TOPS program
- To be sustainable, maintainable and expandable to all TOPS Open Space properties as well as to establish an ongoing administration and maintenance plan for the wayfinding system
At the December Parks Advisory Board the project process, design concepts and public feedback to date were presented to the board. The project team also introduced the preferred design of the open space wayfinding project. The preferred wayfinding sign family designs are included here for additional review and comment.

The following pdfs were presented at the Open House on November 12th, 2019. The design alternatives reflect the preliminary concepts for the signage type, style and look. Signage content will be developed moving forward. The preferred alternative will be presented at the TOPS Working Committee Meeting and the Parks Advisory Board in their December meetings. What is TOPS?
The TOPS tax of one-tenth of one percent (0.10%) was established by a vote of the people in 1997 in order to encourage, foster and promote public-private partnerships in the preservation of open space lands, trails and parks. In 2003 voters renewed TOPS until 2025. As of 2017, the TOPS program has built 46.8 miles of trail, has contributed to 37 park projects and acquired over 4,723 acres of open space.

After the open house, the concept plans will be refined and posted on the website for additional public review and comment during the month of December.
